The stays respectively the rococo-corset is in general a 'half-bust-corset' and forms preliminarily the torso and less the waist.
It effects are corresponding with the female breast area, lifting up the plunging neckline and keeps the bust flat (as shown in the pictue).
Two different designs under the point of historical view for stays are reported. Characteristic for the difference is the stiffness
created by the quantity of bones (boning): The very stiff 'fully-boned' (or balleiné* ) with some more bones than the less stiff '
semi-boned' stays.
The corset, shown at the picture right hand side, is designed as a semi-stiff model, which is in accordance with the historic
pattern in respect to line-shape and position of the boning as well for the front side as for the rear side. There might be a small
difference to the historic model as there are deviations of the strong three-layer inner lining and in the used stiffeness of the boning material.
The originally used whalebone is replaced by spring-steel rods (whalebone is now-a-days not available anymore).
The shown stay is a 'late' design of this epoch, which creates an improved wearing comfort versus older designs.
As a concession on modern times a hand-painted silken fabric was selected for the outside material, which is indeed in contradiction to the idea of historic preciseness.
With modifications in some details the stays are still presentable at top-formal occasions and are used very often as a wedding-corset.
